Weight Loss Medications

The search for effective and safe weight loss treatment seems never-ending. But the newest anti-obesity medication, SEMAGLUTIDE (Ozempic or Wygovy) and TIRZEPATIDE (Mounjaro or Zepbound), are making waves in the weight loss arena. Tired of spending money on over the counter pills or drink additives that don't work?

These injectable drugs, initially only used as diabetes medication, are approved to treat chronic weight management in the 70% of American adults who are obese or overweight. This highlights the value of treating obesity as a chronic metabolic disease instead of expecting people to rely solely on willpower and lifestyle changes to manage their condition.

Semaglutide belongs to a class of medications known as glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists, or GLP-1 RAs. It mimics the GLP-1 hormone, which is released in the gut in response to eating.

One role of GLP-1 is to prompt the body to produce more insulin, which reduces blood sugar (glucose). GLP-1 in higher amounts also interacts with the parts of the brain that suppress your appetite and signal you to feel full. When used in conjunction with diet and exercise, it can cause significant weight loss — and a reduced risk of cancer, diabetes and heart disease — in people who are obese or overweight.

What are the potential side effects of weight loss injections?

The side effects are typically mild — especially when compared to the complications associated with being overweight/ obesity and can include:

  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Gastrointestinal issues, such as diarrhea, constipation and gassiness
  • Headache
  • Stomach issues, including nausea, vomiting, pain or distension (bloat), reflux

Gastrointestinal issues are the most common complaint among people just starting weight loss injections. Luxe Looks strives to reduce these potential side effects by beginning on a lower dose and slowly increasing the amount you take.

What are the benefits of weight loss injections?

  • Actual weight loss!!!
  • HEART PROTECTIVE: In the longest clinical trial of semiglutide it was found there is SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED HEART ATTACK RISK, STROKE OR HEART-RELATED DEATHS by 20% in people with existing cardiovascular risks with obesity or who are overweight. It has also been shown to benefit those with heart failure.
  • Helps to reduce inflammation!!

Worried about Ozempic face or a saggy rear-end?

Don't be! This is from losing too much weight too fast, not from the injections themselves. Rapid weight loss leads to rapid volume loss to where the skin struggles to "shrink around your new shape." This can be decreased or prevented by a slow and controlled loss- allowing your skin the time to respond. Also here at Luxe Looks we have other modalities that help with skin tightening, collagen/ elastin stimulation and muscle building so you don't loose that rear.

Avoid semaglutide/ tirzepatide if you have:

  • Active cancer
  • History of medullary thyroid cancer
  • History of gallbladder disease
  • History of pancreatitis
  • Multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN2)
  • Liver or kidney disease
  • Actively pregnant or looking to be pregnant in the next 6 months
  • Breastfeeding
